Why palette knife painting is perfect for beginners

If you’re new to painting and feeling intimidated by smooth blending or keeping lines straight, palette knife painting might be the answer for you. Palette Knife Painting is perfect for beginners because it is low-pressure, incredibly playful, and super forgiving.

What is palette knife painting?

Instead of a brush, this technique uses a “knife” (more like a tiny pointy spatula) to layer and push thick acrylic paint directly onto the canvas. If you need help imagining it, this style of painting is like spreading butter on toast. 

If we want to be more technical, this technique is called impasto. Impasto is a painting technique where paint is applied thickly to a canvas such that it transforms the canvas into a tactile, 3D piece filled with buttery textures and rich colours.

• You don’t have to be perfect: The knife naturally stops you from micro-managing details and encourages you to experiment and explore what you can do with the tool!

• You can be playful: The knife pushes you to play with different shapes, bold textures, and expressive movement.
