Thinking about joining us for a watercolour workshop, but not sure which class to pick? You are not alone! Many have asked us about the differences between watercolour and gouache before choosing their workshop.

Here is a quick list of pros and cons to help you decide,

Why choose watercolour?

Pros:

• Soft and glowing look: Great for creating light, dream-like art and smooth colour mixes.

• Calming to use: Very peaceful and relaxing as the paint flows naturally with water.

Cons:

• Tricky to fix mistakes: Once a dark colour goes on the paper, you cannot cover it up with a lighter colour.

• Needs some waiting time: You have to wait for wet spots to dry so colours do not mix together and become muddy.

Why choose gouache?

Pros:

• Super easy for beginners: Made a mistake? Just wait for it to dry and paint right over it with a new colour!

• Bright and bold look: Colours are vibrant, and pop right off the page.

Cons:

• Paints can mix if re-wetted: Putting too much wet paint over a dry layer can accidentally pick up the paint underneath.

• Harder to make see-through: Not meant for super faint or watery layers like traditional watercolour.

So, watercolour or gouache?

Choose Watercolour if: You love to go with the flow! It’s perfect if you enjoy a gentle, relaxing session and don't mind a little happy surprise as the paint blends on paper.

Choose Gouache if: You want a fun, easygoing session where you can freely experiment without worrying about mistakes! It’s great if you love bright, popping colours.
