Here’s the secret: you don't need to know how to draw before learning to paint.
If you’ve ever wanted to pick up a paintbrush but stopped yourself because you felt like you couldn’t draw, we completely understand your fears. Starting something new can be intimidating!
Think of learning to paint like learning to bake a cake: it’s simply a skill you pick up with time and practice. Do you need to know how to cook a gourmet dinner just to bake a cake? Not at all! Painting works the exact same way.
1. “I Can’t Draw” If you can write your name, you can definitely draw!
Drawing isn't a secret gift you're born with; it’s just making lines and curves. And you’re already doing it.
Think about how you write your name. You pick up your pen, place the tip on the paper, and make a series of straight lines and curves. Guess what? That counts as drawing! If you can write, you are ready to paint.
2. Even the greats start at zero
It’s easy to look at famous masterpieces and feel overwhelmed, but remember that even the greatest artists were once complete beginners.
There’s actually an entire genre of art dedicated to works created during an artist's youth, called Juvenilia. Most of these early pieces were never published because, well… beginner art isn’t always pretty. Famous artists like Claude Monet even slashed and burned canvases he wasn't happy with. We rarely see an artist's rough early attempts; we only see the end product of their years of training.
Picasso and Van Gogh took years to build their skills. don’t forget to let yourself be a beginner!
3. So, what is painting?
At its core, painting is simple. It’s not as complicated as you might imagine.
In technical terms: It’s applying paint, pigment, or colour onto a solid surface.
In simple terms: You just pick up a tool, grab some paint, and put it on a canvas.
Paint is a remarkably forgiving medium. We love "happy accidents" here, but if you truly don't like what you painted, don't sweat it! Just let it dry, and start fresh.

The world of painting is huge, and there are so many things you can explore:
