Thinking of taking a break at Artify Studio but not sure which art workshop to pick? Understanding the difference between acrylic and oil painting can help you find the perfect workshop!

Here is a quick list of pros and cons to help you decide,

Why choose acrylic?

A participant of our acrylic palette knife painting workshop. They are painting a forest with a stream.

Pros:

  • Dries Fast: Sets in 10–20 mins (or instantly with our studio hair dryers). This also means you can take your dry canvas home immediately!

  • Beginner-Friendly: Easily paint over mistakes once the layer dries.

Cons:

  • Fast Drying: Makes blending more challenging for beginners.

  • Colour Shift: Colours dry slightly darker than when first painted.

Why choose oil?

Aurora oil painting a dark night sky and mountainscape, from our current oil painting workshops.

Pros:

  • Seamless Blending: Stays wet longer, making soft skies and portraits effortless.

  • Rich Colours: Vibrant, glossy finish that stays the exact same shade when dry.

Cons:

  • Slow Drying: Takes days to dry (hair dryers won't work and it might crack!! ).

  • Harder Quick Fixes: Layering over wet paint can cause colours to mix into mud if you aren't careful.

So, Acrylic or Oil Painting?

Choose Acrylic if: You prefer a more fast-paced style! Just as fun and it’s perfect if you want a dry canvas to take home right away and bright, bold colours that pop.

Choose Oil if: You want a relaxing session where you can take your time! It’s great if you love soft blending with the freedom to tweak your art at your own pace.

No matter which medium you choose, our friendly instructors at Artify Studio will guide you step by step. (Psst- no prior painting experience needed!)
