
This beginner-friendly programme introduces participants to painting with a palette knife. Through demonstrations, guided exercises and hands-on practice, participants will explore colour mixing, paint application, texture and composition. Each session focuses on a different technique, allowing participants to build confidence and complete a finished artwork.
Beginner Palette Knife Painting Workshop (3 sessions)
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Use a palette knife with greater control and confidence
- Mix and apply heavy-body acrylic paint effectively
- Apply both thin and thick layering techniques
- Create a variety of textures and expressive marks
- Build depth through layering, colour and contrast
- Interpret a photograph as a simplified painting
- Plan and complete a balanced composition
- Produce 3 completed palette knife paintings

- Do I need any painting experience? Not at all. This workshop is suitable for beginners, including those who have never painted before.
- Will materials be provided? Yes, all materials needed for the workshop will be provided for use during the session.
- What will I learn in this workshop? You will learn how to use a palette knife for acrylic painting, including how to layer colours, blend colours, scrape paint, and create different textures and marks using different angles, speed, and pressure.
- What is the difference between the 3 sessions?
Session 1: Focuses on controlled painting and thick-layering techniques,
Session 2: Explores a more expressive approach with thinner layers and looser application.
Session 3: To create a personalised and expressive landscape painting based on a selected photograph.
- Will I complete a painting? Yes, participants will complete a painting and bring it home at the end of the workshop.
- What kind of subjects will we paint? The workshop may use simple and suitable subjects that work well with palette knife techniques, allowing participants to focus on texture, layering, and mark-making.
- Is this workshop guided? Yes, the instructor will provide step-by-step guidance, demonstrations, and support throughout both sessions.
- What should I wear? We recommend wearing something comfortable that you do not mind getting a little paint on.
- Will my painting be dry enough to take home?Yes, We will provide a box to help you transport your work safely.
- Can I join alone? Yes, definitely. Many participants join on their own, and the workshop is designed to be welcoming and relaxed.

Medium: Heavy-body acrylic paint
Session 1: Thick Layering Techniques
Objective: Build confidence in applying thick paint to create expressive marks, textures and visual depth.Programme Outline:
- Explore thick paint application and impasto techniques
- Practise pressing, lifting, layering and creating broken-colour effects. Learn how to build a composition from background to foreground. Create depth using colour, contrast and overlapping textures. Complete an expressive palette knife painting
- Refine the focal point and finishing details
Session 2: Thin Layering Techniques
Objective: Learn the fundamentals of palette knife painting and create smooth, controlled effects using thin layers of paint.
Programme Outline:
- Introduction to palette knives, materials and paint consistency
- Learn how to hold and control different palette knives
- Practise spreading, dragging, scraping and blending paint
- Explore basic colour mixing and tonal variation
- Learn how to build a painting using thin layers
- Create a guided palette knife painting
- Add highlights, shadows and finishing details
Session 3: Layers and Expression Landscape Painting Based on Photographs
Objective: Apply the techniques learnt in the previous sessions to create a personalised and expressive landscape painting based on a selected photograph.Programme Outline:
- Select and study a landscape reference photograph
- Simplify the photograph into basic shapes and colour areas
- Plan the composition and colour palette
- Identify the background, focal point and foreground
- Build the painting progressively using thin and thick layers
- Experiment with expressive marks and textures
