This 5-session beginner oil painting course is designed for those who want to build a proper foundation in oil painting, rather than simply follow a one-off painting tutorial. Across the course, you will learn two different approaches to oil painting while completing 3 finished artworks.
Artwork 1 & 2: Alla Prima Painting
Start with a more direct and spontaneous approach. Alla prima means painting “all at once”, working wet-on-wet without waiting for layers to dry.
You will learn how to:
- Mix colours and control paint consistency
- Understand basic values, light and shadow
- Simplify your subject into shapes and colours
- Apply oil paint confidently with brushes
- Work wet-on-wet and make decisions without overworking the painting
Artwork 3: Underpainting & Layered Oil Painting
For your second artwork, you will explore a slower and more structured painting process. You will begin with an underpainting before gradually building colour, details and depth through layers.
You will learn how to:
- Plan a painting before adding colour
- Create an underpainting to establish composition and values
- Build colours and details progressively
- Understand layering and drying between stages
- Refine edges, highlights, shadows and focal areas
With five sessions, there is enough time to practise, repeat techniques and understand how oil paint behaves. The focus is on building confidence and fundamental skills that you can continue applying to your own paintings after the course.
Suitable for complete beginners. All materials and instructor guidance are provided.
