Gouache Experience!

1. Make outer border using tape (to peel later for a cleaner outcome)

2. Paint Background using the majority colour (refer to picture)

3. Draw outlines of chosen composition (reference picture) using pencil/watercolour pencil.

This teaches the importance of observational skills, balance, composition and attention to details.
 

4. Paint layer by layer, using darkest to lightest colours

This teaches colour theory, how to mix colours and learning colour relationship, light and dark hues.

5. Final detailing, polish darkest and lightest colours (important: highlights) This teaches study of light and shadows
 

6. Peel off tape (Satisfying process)

Gouache painting is a vibrant and versatile medium that blends the best of both watercolours and acrylics. Made from pigments, water, and a gum arabic binder, gouache has a smooth, opaque finish that allows for bold, saturated colours and rich textures. Unlike watercolour, which remains translucent, gouache can be applied in layers to create depth, while still allowing the flexibility of water to adjust consistency and transparency. It's perfect for both detailed, precise work and expressive, broad strokes. Gouache has been a favourite of illustrators, designers, and fine artists for centuries, known for its use in book illustrations, posters, and even animation backgrounds.

Fun Facts
The medium was used by famous artists like Henri Matisse and Wassily Kandinsky, and it was also a key tool in animation studios like Disney during the 1930s. Gouache dries faster than watercolour but slower than acrylic paint, making it the ideal medium to work with. It's very forgiving, giving artists more time to adjust and be flexible with their work.
